General Info
The Italian Thermotechnical Commitee, established in Milan in 1933, affiliated to UNI (Italian Standardization Body) and acknowledged by Ministry of Industry (as indipendent no-profit association), is assigned the responsability to carry out standardization work in the various sectors of thermal energy production, distribution and utilization. It benefits from the collaboration of private industries, public bodies, agencies and associations (aroud 1000 experts in total) which, through their technical and financial support, enable CTI to operate in more than 100 national and international standardization working groups.
CTI co-operates with international organizations (mostly ISO and CEN) for standardization purposes. CTI is responsible for elaborating projects for standards and technical specifications (not legally binding, but representing a refernce criterion for concerned sectors); updating and reviewing standards and documents; organizing experts participation in international normative working groups.
For the implementation of the lawsand regulations/standards regarding the enregy field, CTI is also advisor if Italian ministries in charge: Economic Development (ex Trade & Industry), Environment & Teritorial Protection, Agricultural & Forestal Policies.
Besides, in last years CTI has assumed a significant role in standardization programs concerning Bio-fuels (direct participation to activities of CEN TC 335, CEN TC 383 and to BIONORM Project) and Solid Recovered Fuels (participation to activities of CEN TC 343). This standardization work has triggered the launch of more focused standardization-oriented research activities in thermo-technical fields such as solid and liquid bio-fuels, waste to energy and solid recovered fuels.
CTI is not only the Italian Standardization Body for Themo-technical issues, but also a research organization which is extremely active in the different fields and topics related to sustainable energy systems. CTI has recently denveloped several studies on renewable energy, for the application of biomass technologies and for promotion of bio-fuels for heating and transportation (also through LCA analyses), on the introduction of energy efficiency measures in different sectors (industrial and residential, especially in buildings to satisfy the new directive on Energy Performance), on the development of energy sustainability in particular regions within Italy (e.g. Brianza, Ticino Park, Mountain Community of Scalve) and also in other areas of the world (e.g. Sri Lanka).
