The Association of Municipalities Polish Network 'Energy Cities' (PNEC) was registered in June 1994 as a country-wide, non-government and non-profit organisation with its office in Kraków. The Association objectives are:

• to help in creating the municipal development strategy, in the sphere of energy efficiency and environment protection
• to promote renewable and decentralised energy sources
• to develop municipality initiatives through exchange of experiences, the transfer of know how and the organisation of energy efficiency projects.

The Association is involved in the following activity areas:

• local energy policy
• energy efficiency
• promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency
• the integrated energy planning
• ecological education
• the exchange of experience
• the exchange of information on financing sources
• looking for partners

The Association activities also include lobbying at the national and regional level; support for local authorities in the creation and implementation of energy efficiency and environmental protection policies; campaigns for promoting environmental protection and rational use of energy as well as joint representation on national and international fora.

The target group of the Polish Network "Énergie Cités" are small and medium-size cities where the need for energy education, information and co-operation is at its greatest. With over 40 members (municipalities in Poland, 1 in Lituania and 2 Ukrainian organisations) PNEC co-operates with local authorities for promotion of local sustainable energy policies.

PNEC is a member of the European Network Energy Cities in Besançon, France.
