History of Carbon Descent

SEA RENUE emerged in 2003 from a collaboration of Sustainable Energy Action and Renewable Energy in the Urban Environment.

RENUE (Renewable Energy in the Urban Environment) was established in 1996 as an environmental charity, focusing on renewable energy. Adopting an arts based approach RENUE worked on local community initiatives partnering local authorities such as Merton and Wandsworth.

SEA (Sustainable Energy Action) was established in May 1998 as a not for profit limited company by Southwark Council through the SAVE programme. Through the programme it was allocated 3 years of core funding, matched by support from Southwark. By 2001 SEA had reached impressive heights. It was well established in South London and with a wider understanding of environmental impacts, SEA began to work throughout London.

In spring 2003 both SEA and RENUE recognised that they had a similar ethos and that the environmental and social goals could be better served by joining forces. From an exploration of a working partnership a merger was agreed.

In 2008 SEA RENUE moved offices and in June of the same year changed its name to Carbon Descent, continuing to work on a not-for-profit basis.

The team has grown to 15 highly accredited staff. It is supported by 13 board directors and trustees who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to all areas of its work. Currently it offer a range of 14 different services in the areas of energy; the built environment, transport, renewables and resource use for public, private and third sector organisations in greater London and beyond - all of which measurably reduce carbon emissions.
