The Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) was founded in Autumn 2000 by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour in association with the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing, and the KfW group (Germany's leading promotional bank). This cooperative effort was an expression of the German government's new energy policy and a component in the national strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Together with partners from industry and the financial sector as well as from the federal ministries, dena launches and realises campaigns and projects as a centre of competence for energy efficiency. It is its overall objective to accelerate the market entry of more energy-efficient as well as renewable energy technologies and services. Therefore it provides technical and non-technical assistance and information and raises awareness for the rational use of energy. dena moreover helps implement European Union€s and national energy legislation and gives advice to its ministries in order to develop and implement quality labels and minimum standards for energy efficiency.
dena's financing is based on mandates, commissions and tasks assigned by the associates as well as by industry and business. The project financing is closely connected to the philosophy to bring together the relevant partners in order to support development and implementation of markets for energy efficiency by means of market transformation.
