CSE's mission as an independent charity is to advance sustainable energy policy and practice. It is one of the few energy organisations in the UK whose mission encompasses social, economic and environmental drivers and hence aim to develop truly sustainable energy solutions. CSE seeks solutions that engage people and communities to meet real needs for both environmentally sound and affordable energy services. CSE aims to achieve its mission by:

• delivering effective advice, education and practical projects for people in the local area
• developing innovative energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives and inspiring education and training programmes
• undertaking original research, policy analysis and strategy development to enhance understanding and improve policy-making at local, regional and national level

Areas of expertise:

• Fuel poverty research and analysis - including the development of the Fuel Poverty Indicator (a new methodology for measuring fuel poverty at a very local level)
• Energy education for schools - providing teaching resources for the national curriculum and delivering energy education to over 1000 schools across the UK
• Working with regional and local government to develop renewable energy targets
• Renewable energy and energy efficiency training for energy advisors, local authority staff and elected council members
• Designing and delivering energy efficiency advice and practical initiatives in local communities
• Undertaking feasibility studies and design specificiations for small-scale renewables including CHP, wind, PV and solar thermal
• Energy audits, technical monitoring and consultancy services

Target audience: CSE works with individuals and organisations from public, private and voluntary sectors on a wide range of initiatives at local, regional and national level.
