ICLEI is the international environmental agency for local governments. Its mission is to build and support a world-wide movement of local governments to achieve tangible improvements in global environmental and sustainable development conditions through cumulative local actions.
The Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign has been running since 1993 and is one of ICLEI's key programmes. The mission of the CCP campaign is to build and serve a world-wide movement of local governments who adopt policies and implement measures that achieve measurable results in local greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions, improve air quality, and enhance urban liveability and sustainability. The campaign offers a framework for local authorities to commit to developing climate protection policies and actions. More than 130 local authorities in Europe have joined the CCP-Europe campaign; more than 440 worldwide, accounting for approximately 5% of global ghg emissions. ICLEI's CCP-Europe Campaign has built the local government constituency and continues to act as an advocate for local government before the Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC, highlighting municipal accomplishments and ensuring support for local governments' continuing work.
