Further Information

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe, Country Office Slovenia (REC CO) is a non-partisan, non-advocacy, not-for-profit international organisation with a mission to assist in solving environmental problems. It was established as a branch office of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe in 1993. The centre fulfils this mission by promoting cooperation among non-governmental organisations, governments, businesses and other environmental stakeholders, and by supporting the free exchange of information and public participation in environmental decision-making.

The first activities of the REC CO were related to providing environmental NGOs and local communities with training and advice on environmental project management and accounting, and to financial support of their environmental protection activities. Since than, through 10 years of operation the REC Slovenia enlarged its activities to all environmental stakeholders groups and to broader field of environmental protection and sustainable development topics. The CO significantly supported environmental stakeholders communication, cooperation and participation in environmental decision-making processes. With organising workshops, seminars and forums, with grants giving, with providing training and information flow, the REC CO assisted Slovenian environmental NGOs, local communities, local authorities, business and academic sector to become important performers of environmental protection activities and of national development programmes.

Knowledge and expertise on environmental protection, on sustainable development issues and on project management enabled the REC CO to get involved in implementation of several national and international projects and programmes. Among others, the REC CO also took over the role of the Secretariat in several Phare Cross-border Programmes (1997-2003), Phare Access Programme, 2002/03, technical assistance to Global Environmental Facility Focal Point in 2000/01 and technical assistance for Management of Project Preparation Facility Grant Scheme PPF II.

The REC CO Slovenia has the role of initiator and coordinator for several environmental and sustainable development projects in Slovenia. The concrete areas of expertise are:

One of the most important characteristics of the REC is its neutral, non-advocacy and non-partisan role. This enables the REC CO to maintain a central position among different stakeholders, and excellent relations and cooperation with all of them. The REC CO Slovenia is known as an organisation that often brings together representatives of different stakeholders groups who otherwise have difficulties in communication, and facilitates effective discussions on different environmental and sustainable development topics. Conclusions and recommendations from such events are directly used to introducing new environmental trends in Slovenia or to better implement the policies and programmes.

More information with all details about REC CO activities can be obtained from the website (see above).
