Organisationen for Vedvarende Energi - the Danish Organization for Renewable Energy (OVE) was founded in 1975 as a non-governmental organization based on a popular movement for RE in Denmark with close relationship to the anti-nuclear movement (OOA).
Its aim is to work for a resource and environmental conscous energy policy, and for self-sufficiency from renewable energy sources. In 1978 it was changed into a regular membership organization. OVE is consisting of both individuals as well as groups - for example windmill cooperatives - interested in information and technology. For the time being there are aproximately 3 000 members in the organization.
OVE has no party-political connections, but works for co-operations across political and economic oppositions. But of course there is a certain variety in the understanding for the ideas from left to rightwing politicians! The work is carried out on an idealistic, non-profit basis, and aims at openness and free dissemination af knowledge.
OVE believes that a redirection in the consumption patterns and a change over to RE supply systems not will succeed unless they get a strong popular involvement. Therefore there is a need for building up strong forces in the society in order to maintain a favourable development. To achieve this OVE has gone into cooperation with other organizations with interests in energy and environmental matters. The most important collaborators are the local energy and environment information centers organized in "The collaborating energy offices".
From the very beginning OVE has given the information part a very high priority. An important part is its magazine named "Vedvarende Energi and Miljø" (Renewable Energy and Environment) which is released 6 times a year with a comprehensive amount of articles dealing with all kinds of subjects (not too specific) technical issues as well as organizatian, legistation and regulations - but most of all examples from which you can get inspiration and ideas af how to realize energy savings and RE technologies.
Another important activity is creating a possibility for exhange of experiences by bringing people together in the so-called teach-ins - an informal way of education. Long time before official research programmes have been formulated, developers, inventors, home-builders and energy groups were making theoretical investigations and practical experiments with RE. The subjects could be wind energy, solar heating, biogas, passive solar heating, combined systems or local energy planning. This method has turned out to be very efficient where there is a need for quick progress and spreading information to a gruop of potential RE developers.
Parallel to the activity mentioned above OVE has arranged numerous courses for a smaller number of participants - typical of an duration of a weekend or sometimes a week. This OVE activity is less important today because the local information centers have taken over most of this work. Therefore the role of OVE has turned to the fundraiser and initiator of board campaign activities instead.
