Further Information

Stora Enso is an integrated paper, packaging and forest products company producing publication and fine papers, packaging boards and wood products, areas in which the Group is a global market leader.

Stora Enso's energy procurement and consumption is typified by a high share of CO2-neutral, wood-based bio-fuels in energy production (62% in 2002) and a trend towards combined heat and power production. The most important bio-fuel sources are black liquor and bark. Others are, for example, wood, paper, packaging materials (paperboard) and sludge from effluent purification. A significant proportion of the total amount of bio-fuels used by Stora Enso comes from own processes.

The production of wood-based bio-fuels gives Stora Enso an opportunity to participate in the emerging markets for Green Electricity. The Group is currently examining more ways to exploit these opportunities. The co-generation of electricity and heat linked to chemical pulp production, utilising by-products such as black liquor, bark and wood residuals, is particularly important in this respect.
