Western Norway Research Institute performs research, analysis and studies on transport and environment. This include alternative transport fuels and energy efficiency in transport. The focus of Western Norway Research Institute in these fields is to improve the knowledge of conditions for increased use of alternative energy and energy efficiency actions and measures in transport. Other areas of specialty are environmental management, industrial ecology and sustainable mobility.

Particular focus is placed on two types of fuel:

• Renewable fuel produced from biological material. This includes biodiesel, the alcohols ethanol and methanol, in addition to biogas.
• Hydrogen, which can be produced from various energy sources, for example electrolysis of water and from natural gas.

Areas of expertise:

• Biofuels, hydrogen, alternative motor technologies, energy efficiency actions.
• Evaluation of alternative fuels and energy efficiency measures in tranport.
• Life-cycle assessment of alternative fuels.

Target Audience: Industry, transport companies, EU-commission, Local, regional and national government.
