The Foundation Joint Implementation Network (JIN) was established with the aim to create an international network for research activities and information exchange about climate change policy issues, in particular project-based emissions trading. Over the years JIN has broadened its field of expertise to other issues such as technology transfer and energy market liberalisation. Overall the Foundation JIN mission is to carry out international economic research in a broad sense, both for the public and the private sector.
Areas of expertise: Foundation JIN has developed a long history of expertise since its inception in 1994. Below, a non-exhaustive overview is provided of main research interests.
First, JIN publishes the Joint Implementation Quarterly (JIQ) with subscribers in the fields of policy makers, science, non-governmental organisations and business in over 140 countries. As such, a unique medium for dissemination of information on the Kyoto flexibility mechanisms and energy related subjects has been created.
Second, JIN has contributed to developing the design of the Dutch ERUPT program for JI tenders; evaluated JI project Guidelines for the same programme; and revised guidelines for the second ERUPT tender in commission of the Netherlands' government.
hird, JIN co-ordinated the EU research project PROBASE on baselines for JI and CDM projects under the Kyoto Protocol (Fifth Framework Programme). Moreover, JIN produced a substantial number of studies on climate policy.
Fourth, experience on emissions trading was accumulated through research on "Guidance for UK Emissions Trading Projects", a project for the UK government.
Fifth, JIN dissiminates its extensive knowledge and expertise on the Kyoto mechanisms through involvement in capacity development programmes. Currently, JIN is involved in the Asia pro-Eco programme "EU - Asia Institutional co-operation and Multinational Dialogues on Enabling the Meaningful Participation of Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam in the Clean Development Mechanism".
Finally, JIN has carried out various studies for Gasunie (the Dutch Gas Union) on issues such as 'security of supply', gas market liberalisation, and scenario-analyses.
Target audience: JIN covers and serves national governments and international policy bodies and the business sector alike. For example, many studies have been executed for the Netherlands' Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Commission. From the business sector, studies have been carried out for the Dutch Gas Union, the International Gas Union, Essent, Rabobank & Lafarge amongst others.
