The Energy Agency of Madrid was created in 2006 in the framework of the Intelligent Energy - Europe Programme 2007-2013.

The agency belongs to a project for the creation of four energy agencies:

• Energy Agency of Madrid (Spain)
• Energap, in Podravje (Slovenia)
• APEA, in Enna (Italy)
• ASEA in Benevento (Italy)

It is a private foundation and non-profit organization which was founded by:

• Regional Government of Madrid
