SEMAI, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a regular participant in many national and international forums related to energy and water resources, these being of paramount importance in a relatively isolated, semi-arid region such as the Canary Archipelago. Its philosophy is to focus on those technologies that promise directly applicable solutions to problems felt in its environs. It then promotes the findings and results from pilot activities in popular local and national associations, seminars, short courses, etc. Additionally, it has offered a Master course in Environmental Engineering and desalination, for the past ten years. This course was the first of its kind to be offered in the Spanish language and attracts students from many Latin American countries. Master in Environmental Administration and Programs of Doctorate in Environment with the Polytechnic Experimental National University (UNEXPO) in Venezuela.
SEMAI is a tightly-knit group devoted mostly to research. In addition to its regular staff and infrastructure many professionals from other departments, laboratories and faculties regularly collaborate in the research, adding flexibility and interdisciplinary acumen to its experience in the fields of RES, hydrogen technologies, waste treatment and reuse, etc. SEMAI has thus participated in numerous R&D projects, Concerted Actions, etc, mostly within the EC-funded programmes but often involving institutions from South America, Africa and Asia. Some of these projects are:
Areas of expertise: renewable energies, desalination, photovoltaic, hydrogen and fuel cells, education, water reuse and environmental issues.
