In 2001 the City Council of the Comuni di Rimini approved the campaign promoted by Italian Cities for Climate Protection and 10 policies were identified that would enable one to live better in the city of Rimini while at the same time reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy savings and improving the utilisation of renewable energy sources.
In 2006 the City Council approved the first Action Plan for Urban Sustainability (« Sostenibilità Urbana ») with three primary areas of action: internal action for the improvement of sustainability within the administration, awareness raising and support for the improvement of sustainability for all citizens and triggering the local energy market through the use of financial resources collected through savings. The Action Plan has been broken down in 22 projects with corresponding indicators.
In September 2005 the City's first Forum was launched which dealt with the City's Agenda 21 for individual neighbourhoods («Agenda21 dei Quartieri») and tackled the topics of mobility, green public areas and waste collection.
In Summer 2006 the city presented its involvement in the BELIEF project to a wider public and announced the start of a Forum entitled «Financial Resources for Intelligent Energy».
