The Alliance for Rural Electrification is an international non-profit organization founded in 2006 by a number of European renewable energy Industry Associations: the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA), European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA), European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), European Biomass Industry Association (EUBIA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
The Alliance for Rural Electrification was created to respond to the outstanding need of providing a sustainable access to electricity to the developing world and to facilitate the involvement of its industry members within a rural electrification global dialogue, involving not only government and donor agencies but also manufacturers, rural entrepreneurs, end consumers, local technicians, NGOs, utility companies, banks, etc.
The Alliance for Rural Electrification wants to stimulate and support durable rural electrification from donor assistance to the development of sustainable renewable energy markets that will stay long after the initiating project is finished.
The Alliance for Rural Electrification aims at becoming a key player in the field of development through Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) actions from private actors willing to invest in rural electrification.
The Alliance for Rural Electrification is based in Brussels, at the Renewable Energy House, a sustainable renewable energy building surrounded by the European Institutions, from where the Secretariat develops its main activities.
