The main focus of the Rathenow Energy Agency is local energy management on behalf of the local government: This includes the following areas:

• Optimisation of the structure of local energy supply
• utilisation of renewable energies
• rational use of energy in public buildings and public lighting

After the EC supported 3 year establishment phase at the end of 1998 the focus was put on the development of actions for the realisation of energy saving projects in the public building sector. These actions include:

• Tariff related measures:
  • Energie consumtion monitoring
  • Public private partnership (municipality, local power utility)
  • Special energy supply contracts
• Technical measures:
  • Procurement guidance for planning processes
  • Inprovement of building insulation
  • Innovative lighting and lighting control systems
  • Optimisation of heating equipment
  • Individual room temperature

• Changing citizens behaviour
• disseminiation of information
• promotion of technology
• solar energy
