Motiva was established as an Information Centre for Energy Efficiency in May 1993 by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI). In 1996 Motiva's area of activities was extended, by including the promotion of renewable energy sources in the responsibilities.

As of December 2000 Motiva Oy is an impartial and state-owned joint stock company with 23 employees and annual turnover of 4 million Euros.

Motiva is a service organisation activating the market for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Motiva's policy is aimed at creating an efficient entity of information, methods and technologies. Integration of energy matters into environmental management systems is promoted. Customer service-oriented approach increases the efficiency of activities.
