A mosaic of a wind turbine has been selected as
the winning entry in in the 7-11 Category of the First
ManagEnergy Drawing and Photography Competition 2006 - Changing the European
Landscape.
The mosaic was created by Grace Shanahan-Smith, age 11, of St
Katharine's CE VA Primary School, Bournemouth, UK.
The winning image was chosen by members of the ManagEnergy Reflection Group
who independently selected their favourite images. When the votes were added
up, Grace achieved the highest score.
St Katharine's School was introduced to the competition by Mr Neil Short of Bournemouth Borough Council. Mr Short is a regular visitor to the ManagEnergy website, and is actively involved in promoting sustainable energy to schools throughout the Bournemouth area.
Year 6 Class Teacher, Mrs Rebecca Thompson, and Phase Leader, Mr Andrew Bright, encouraged pupils in Class 6AB to enter the compeition, after they enjoyed a school project on renewable energy.
On Friday 15th September 2006, the winning school was presented with its prizes by Roger Coombs and Katy Hall of CPL Press, who develop and manage the ManagEnergy website, including KidsCorner.
The class was presented with a selection of solar energy kits, and 30 pupils received 'Ronaldo the Reindeer' T-shirts. The presentation was attended by teachers and pupils at the school, as well as the winner's proud parents and Mr Short from Bournemouth Borough Council.
Grace has now moved on to Secondary School, but returned to St Katharine's for the presentation. She was presented with gift tokens to be spent on art supplies to further her creative talents, as well as a clockwork radio from Bournemouth Borough Council.
In recognition of the school's achievement, the council also generously provided a 32W Solar Panel to the school and associated educational kit.
Note: St Katharine's School recently held an 'Africa Week', which was generously supported by parents and raised over £800. The money is being used to provide solar power to a school in Uganda, which will create tremendous benefits and opportunities for the local pupils and teachers.
