BACKGROUND TO THE WORKSHOP

Energy is central to modern societies. It plays a key part in people's everyday lives and is a major factor in economic competitiveness and employment. Sustainable development is a central theme of the energy policy, considering that 94 % of man-made emissions are attributed to the energy sector when the Union has to take action to implement the Kyoto Protocol.

Renewable energy plays an important role in the transition to sustainable energy production. Biomass is and will be a local/regional resource, and as such makes it possible to effect local/regional employment whilst creating environmental benefits. In addition, the actions taken at the local and regional level are becoming increasingly important.

The aim of this workshop was to develop and implement replication strategies based on experience from good practice case studies and presentations. Through discussion we aim to find new ways of reaching the common objective of increased renewable energy.

This ManagEnergy workshop presenting the area small scale biomass utilisation was organised in conjunction with the conference Pellets 2002. The ManagEnergy section of the conference was oriented towards local and regional energy agencies and is another building block to facilitate global thinking on a strategic and local level. The aim of the workshop was to learn from each other and give support on a local and regional level in the capacity building process and in the development of replication strategies. It was the third of a series of workshops organised by ManagEnergy.

This ManagEnergy workshop was specifically aimed at those serving local and regional energy activities and attendance was free. However, the activity also included an optional study tour for a maximum of 45 participants. The cost of the study tour was €200 per person (FREE to one participant from each SAVE agency - space allowing).

The workshop started with lunch at Norra Latin, Drottninggatan 71 B, Stockholm City Conference Centre. For more information about the conference facilities, including a map, see www.stoccc.se.
