The European Directive on "Energy Performance of Buildings" presents a great challenge for the transformation of European building sector towards energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. Governments are required to implement a respective legal framework.

However, in order to make sustainable energy use happen in real life, local action is essential, such as awareness raising, training, technical support for different professional groups.

Regional and local energy agencies have a crucial role to play in this process as they have both access to the local stakeholders in the building sector (such as building owners, building professionals, local authorities, equipment manufacturers, installers etc.) and to European know-how in this field.

The workshop aimed at providing up-dated information on existing successful local initiatives in the field of sustainable building solutions and it will take a two-fold approach:

  • how can local actors support the objectives of the buildings directive and thereby contribute to sustainability
  • how can they profit from new services that will be necessary for the implementation of the directive (e.g. certification, boiler inspection, training and monitoring of other market actors)
WORLD SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DAYS

The major international conference on sustainable energy

The conference World Sustainable Energy Days 2004 from 3-5 March 2004 in Wels/Austria, provided a key forum for learning about major European trends in energy policies and technologies, for exchanging expertise, for initiating projects and establishing partnerships. The high-profile conference was organised by the regional energy agency of Upper Austria, O.Ö. Energiesparverband. The events of the World Sustainable Energy Days 2004 were attended by more than 900 delegates from 64 countries.

Unique combination of events

The World Sustainable Energy Days offered a unique combination of events including the European Pellets Conference which provided information on technology, innovation and market trends. More than 600 delegates attended the Pellets Conference. Another high-profile event was the conference Tomorrow's Buildings - Technology Trends put into Action, which offered insights into forward-thinking innovations in energy and buildings technologies and showed how innovative solutions found by European researchers could be applied in practice. Additionally the European Green Electricity Forum gave an overview of the most recent green electricity trends around the globe and presents the most exciting R&D projects. The evening event Megatrends of Sustainable Energy - a rare gathering of renowned experts from different spheres, offered interesting solutions and impulses to the exciting question "What does the future of energy hold?". Finally at the ManagEnergy Workshop on "the Buildings Directive - opportunities at a local level", local initiatives for sustainable buildings were highlighted.

The majority of the above events were broadcast live by ManagEnergy - see Internet Broadcasts for details and video on demand recordings.

OPET event "European Green Electricity Forum"

In the framework of the World Sustainable Energy Days and with the support of the OPET RES-e partners, the OPET event "European Green Electricity Forum" was held. By presenting the most exciting results from R & D projects, the conference contributed to making Europe's electricity production greener. Inspiring projects, as for example "power from heaven" presenting a PV plant at a church roof, the Upper Austrian initiative for renovating small hydro power plants and "successful wind energy developement" showed how this can be done. Finally it was discussed whether stirling engines would be ready for the market soon.
