Key Information related to Energy Education

Over the next 3 years, ManagEnergy will be placing an increasing emphasis on Education. As always, we rely upon the local energy actors to provide us with information about activities in their region. See the ManagEnergy KidsCorner section below for details of how these plans are progressing and how you can help.

ManagEnergy KidsCorner
ManagEnergy KidsCorner Websites

The ManagEnergy KidsCorner websites feature energy and transport pages including games, downloads, animations, videos, statistics, photos and other teaching resources aimed at 7-11 year olds (top left), 12-16 year olds (bottom left) and their teachers.

With the addition of Croatian and Turkish versions of the ManagEnergy KidsCorner in March 2008, the pages for 7-11 and 11-15 year olds are now available in 27 languages.

The ManagEnergy KidsCorner can be found online at:

www.managenergy.net/kidscorner/ or via the direct link www.learn-energy.net

The website includes a portal with hundreds of links to online energy education resources in all Member States. It also includes energy-related educational materials in all twenty-seven languages.

However, we still need your help to make sure we include as many links as possible to pages in your language and in your country.

To submit links, simply complete the online form at:

www.managenergy.net/kidscorner/addasite.html

or send an email to Roger Coombs: kidscorner@managenergy.net.

The exact URL of the education web pages and a short summary (50 words) in English is always very helpful, particularly for websites in languages other than English.

Quick Links and Bright Ideas added to KidsCorner
In February 2007, two new features were added to the teachers database pages on KidsCorner:
  • 'Quick Links'
  • 'Bright Ideas'
'Quick Links' have been added to FEEDU, Eco-schools and European Environment Agency (EEA) educational web pages. In coming weeks, 'Quick links' will be added to Active Learning toolkits and an exciting new EEA Eco-Agents game. This reflects the increasing cooperation and synergy between ManagEnergy and other leading energy education projects in Europe.

A new 'Bright Ideas' section has also been added to the teacher database pages of KidsCorner:

www.managenergy.net/kidscorner/brightideas.html

This is essentially a collection of short reports and links featuring effective ideas on energy education that can be replicated across schools in Europe. Current examples include competitions, student conferences and renewable energy installations at schools. Additional web pages will be added as the scope and content of the 'Bright Ideas' section develops.

If you have been involved in an energy education project that children in your region enjoyed, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Simply send an e-mail with details (and pictures) to kidscorner@managenergy.net
2007 ManagEnergy KidsCorner Drawing and Photo Competition
Many thanks to everyone who supported this year's KidsCorner competition. As indicated in the October 2007 newsletter, a microsite with details and photos from regional competitions, galleries of selected images, an overview and a winners page has been created. Following independent judging by members of the ManagEnergy Reflection Group the winners were:

Photo competition winner - Arnas Karpavičius, Age 15, Kaunas Juozo Grušo Secondary School, Lithuania Drawing competition winner - Alba Alvarez Castro, Age 10, C.P. La Palomera, León, Spain

ManagEnergy congratulates the winning pupils and schools, as well as the two energy agencies involved in organising the local competitions that resulted in the winning entries - LEI - Lithuanian Energy Institute and EREN - Ente Regional de la Energía de Castilla y León - and will be visiting the schools to present prizes in late 2007.

Special thanks must also go to the Local Energy Actors who organised regional competitions on behalf of ManagEnergy and presented T-shirts and certificates to children at their local schools in Portugal, Spain, UK, Denmark, Finland, Romania, Lithuania and Serbia.

Video: Europe's children learn to fight climate change

Video still 1Video still 2Schoolchildren are tomorrow's adults and have a crucial role to play in tackling climate change. As they grow older they will have a huge responsibility in ensuring the world reduces its emissions of harmful greenhouse gases by using energy more efficiently. In an effort to help young children understand many of the issues behind climate change, the European Union's Intelligent Energy Europe  (IEE) programme has supported a number of practical, grass roots schemes that teach 'energy education' in primary schools. The projects bring together local experts on energy efficiency and the children's own teachers to run fun, but informative classes on energy saving issues. In 2007, the IEE programme has made available a budget of €55 million for energy efficiency projects in Europe.

This video, which has been produced by the Intelligent Energy Executive Agency, is free of charge and copyright. It takes a deliberately 'grass roots' approach and presents a selection of projects by focusing on the children and their teachers.

Education on Energy - Teaching tomorrow's energy consumers
Brochure Cover

In his preface to this brochure, Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, writes "This brochure outlines the energy challenge, emphasises the role of education as a vector in changing behaviour, and shows how some young people have already made an impact. Case studies from across our continent show what is possible and I hope will inspire many new projects."

presented at IEE Information Day - May 2006

HKA2 - Think Globally, Act Locally is the main area of activity within Intelligent Energy - Europe to fund energy education projects. However, projects on education are also funded under VKA2 - SAVE - Retrofitting of social housing (education and training for tenants, housing associations, etc) and VKA9 - STEER - Policy measures for energy efficient transport (education of children and students on the implications of transport behaviour).

Socrates

Socrates is the European programme for education. Its aim is to promote the European dimension and to improve the quality of education by encouraging cooperation between the participating countries.
The programme sets out to develop a Europe of knowledge and thus better cater for the major challenges of this new century: to promote lifelong learning, to encourage access by everybody to education, to acquire qualifications and recognised skills.

Socrates consists of eight actions:

1.  Comenius: school education
2.  Erasmus: higher education
3.  Grundtvig: adult education and other education pathways
4.  Lingua: learning and teaching of European languages
5.  Minerva: information and communication technologies in education
6.  Observation and innovation of education systems and policies
7.  Joint actions with other European programmes
8.  Accompanying measures

Erasmus Mundus

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying in third countries.

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci
is the action programme for implementing the European Community's vocational training policy, supporting and supplementing action taken by the Member States. Its aim is to use transnational cooperation to enhance quality, promote innovation and support the European dimension of vocational training systems and practices.
In specific terms, Leonardo da Vinci pursues three central aims: to facilitate occupational integration, improve the quality of training and access to this training, and to boost the contribution of training to innovation.
The total budget for Leonardo da Vinci is 1.15 billion € over seven years (2000-2006).

Local Experiences

Local experience is a particularly important source of knowledge in the support of EU policies on education. This section provides invaluable knowledge for all local and regional actors by highlighting good practice in the form of reports and video recordings.
