Marco Polo- A funding programme for projects shifting freight transport from the road to sea, rail and inland waterways.
Central Europe: Innovation-The programme promotes competitiveness, accessibility and environmental sustainability in Central Europe.
Central European Initiative-The initiative promotes, among others, projects on sustainable energy; preference is given to projects submitted by and in favour of non-EU CEI Member States.
Education and Training Programmes
Comenius- A programme designed to develop knowledge and understanding, among young people and educational staff, of the diversity of European cultures, languages and their values.
Erasmus Mundus- A programme that offers scholarships and promotes academic cooperation between Europe and the rest of the world.
Leonardo da Vinci- A programme that supports improvements in quality and innovation in vocational education and training systems, institutions and practices.
Grundtvig- A programme to help provide adults with pathways to improving their knowledge and competences.
Cohesion and Regional Development
Interreg IV is the European Territorial Cooperation Objective of the Structural Fund policies for the period 2007-2013. The Interreg IV programmes relevance to local and regional energy action include:
Cohesion Fund- This fund is aimed at Member States whose Gross National Income (GNI) per inhabitant is less than 90% of the Community average. It serves to reduce their economic and social shortfall, as well as to stabilise their economy.
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)- The ERDF aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the European Union by correcting imbalances between its regions.
European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD)- This instrument aims to strengthen the EU’s rural development policy and simplify its implementation.

LIFE+- The financial Instrument for the environment.
Other European Funds
European Investment Bank (EIB)- The EIB furthers the objectives of the European Union by making long-term finance available for sound investment.
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)-The EBRD helps countries in a region, which stretches from Central Europe and the Western Balkans to Central Asia, to become open, market economies.
Joint Assistance to Support Projects in European Regions (JASPERS)- JASPERS assists beneficiary countries (principally the new Member States and acceding countries of the EU) to prepare major infrastructure projects. The environment, energy efficiency and renewable energy are key areas of the initiative.
Joint European Resources for Micro to Medium Enterprises (JEREMIE)- The project is designed to promote increased access to finance for the development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the regions of the EU.
Joint European Support for Sustainable Investment in City Areas (JESSICA)- A programme designed to promote sustainable development for urban areas.
The European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI)- It promotes cooperation with states that share a land or sea border with the EU. The policy aims to increase the prosperity, stability and security of the EU’s neighbours in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and the southern shore of the Mediterranean.
The Risk Sharing Finance Facility (RSFF)- A joint project of the European Commission and the European Investment Bank, the RSFF is a plan to improve access to debt financing for private companies or public institutions by promoting activities in the field of research, development and innovation.
