Since 2001, the Ashden Awards have showcased practical, local energy solutions that cut carbon, protect the environment, reduce poverty and improve people’s lives in the UK and developing world. The 2013 Ashden Conference will be an opportunity to hear from this year’s fantastic Ashden Awards finalists and learn what needs to happen next to take sustainable energy into the mainstream.

With increasing energy prices, dependency on fuel supplies from unstable regions and problems in agriculture, the energy independence of municipalities and regions generates multiple benefits. Energy independence also contributes to environment protection and energy safety. Specific examples from the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria will provide illustrative case studies . The event provides the possibility for 18 local municipalities of the South Transdanubian Region of Hungary to join the Covenant of Mayors initiative. These settlements undertake to contribute to the achievement of the goals of the EU2020 strategy by reducing their CO2 emissions by at least 20% until 2020. During the workshop experts will present the benefits of the adhesion, and highlight the duties of the municipalities regarding the compilation of the Baseline Emission Inventory and SEAP.

Local and regional authorities have a key role to play in sustainable energy management and in driving the energy transition. However, financing energy investments remains a challenge at the local level. This event will showcase concrete examples from local and regional authorities which have succeeded in finding innovative ways to finance sustainable energy with the support of the European institutions, the private and financial sectors, and citizens.

Lighting accounts for 14% of the energy consumption in Europe. LED technologies are emerging but still need some strong and proven case studies to be rolled-out at a large scale. To this end the EC co-financed 2 demonstration projects for lighting 8 prestigious areas and buildings around Europe reaching out to more than 13 million visitors. The pilot projects demonstrate the high quality and flexibility LED offers as well as the energy savings and pollution reduction it brings about.

The ManagEnergy Networking Event will also enable an open discussion on the current and future needs and expectations of Energy Agencies in terms of financing as well as how European funding streams can best respond to them. This will be an interactive event leaving much room for discussion. It will be led by a moderator. For each topic interesting case examples will feed the discussion. The total number of participants will be limited.

MLEI PDA (Mobilising Local Energy Investments - Project Development Assistance) is an initiative of the Intelligent Energy Europe programme which supports local and regional authorities to launch investments based on innovative and highly replicable approaches. 16 projects have been launched since 2012, representing €381 million in investments.

The IEA Solar Heating & Cooling Programme (IEA SHC) and the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF) have decided to combine forces to organise in 2013 what will be one of the largest solar thermal conferences worldwide. Nearly Zero Energy Buildings Open Doors Days - Sweden
We will organise doors open days in 10 EU countries in November 2013 and 2014. During these events both public and private actors can visit new and refurbished houses and public buildings, highlighting nearly zero energy standards. The Swedish events takes mainly place in Kalmar, Kronoberg and Blekinge Counties. In Sweden the initative is supported by IEE and by the Swedish Energy Agency.
