The two district heating systems will supply schools, residential buildings, and a hospital. The extension, expected to be completed by 2017, will eventually provide heat to half the inhabitants of Nantes' social housing units.

The district heating systems will be supplied through the combustion of both waste (41%) and wood (43%).

The aim of this project is to cover the heating needs of social housing units in particular. As a result, 49,5% of social housing residents in Nantes are expected to benefit from a long-term drop in their energy bills thanks to their connection to these systems.

Condominiums joining the new district heating system will also receive a 15% reduction in their bills.

The Climate Plan of Nantes Métropole aims at reducing the CO2 emissions per inhabitant by 30% by 2020.

The installation of boilers supplied by renewable energy (including biomass or waste) is a particularly effective lever to achieve this goal.
