Synopsis
The municipality of Lausanne has a general policy of close involvement with the organisation of the transport of its citizens. Specifically, the municipality has set out a Transport Planning Directive (Plan Directeur des Déplacements, PDD), which encourages journeys on foot, by bicycle and on public transport. The Pédibus is a walking bus, that means a system for accompanying children on their walk to school. A pedestrian bus is mapped out on a public transport model: children wait for the Pédibus at "stops" in front of specified signs (giving Pédibus schedules, volunteer parent details), and then join the bus to complete their journey to school. Volunteer parents with identification badges accompany the children. So, the Pédibus operates thanks to a voluntary parental collaboration with organisational and logistic support from the local authorities. Currently, 15 routes with an average of 435 m (~160 m for the shortest and ~880 m for the longest) exist. The municipality of Lausanne has asked for a detailed study to be carried out in 2003 with a view to including the Pédibus initiative in its Local Agenda 21 ("The creation of a policy of sustainable development in the city of Lausanne").
