Case Study: LPG Taxi Conversion - London Borough of Camden, United Kingdom

View the Case Study

Synopsis

Camden is a leading borough in the development of sustainable land use and transport planning policies and actions, as well as air quality improvement initiatives. Following a diverse consultation process with stakeholders, Camden's Green Transport Strategy (GTS), 'Taking steps for a people friendly Camden - towards a new era', was adopted by the Environment Committee in November 1997. It plays a key role in helping Camden to achieve traffic reduction and air quality targets in partnership with others to improve quality of life. For vehicles to convert from petrol or diesel to LPG costs many thousands of pounds. 65% of this cost is underwritten by a 'powershift' grant. Camden Council allocated some funds to underwrite the remaining 35% of the costs. Some 17 taxis have been converted as a result of this scheme and Camden is currently looking for additional funding to progress it further.
