View the Case Study

Synopsis

The project "Walk and Bike to School" is part of LundaMaTs, the city's sustainable transport strategy that was introduced in 1997. In 1999, several projects were initiated, such as a mobility centre, the bicycle town, and walking and cycling to school. Since then, a large number of activities - infrastructure measures as well as soft measures - have been carried out. The principal objectives of the city's transport policy are:

In 1998 the project "Walk and Bike to School" started as part of LundaMaTs. The major reason was that it became more and more common for parents to drive their children to school. This behaviour induces a downward-going spiral that forces even more parents into driving their children, as the traffic environment around the school deteriorates and becomes unsafe. To break this spiral the city of Lund started this project. To get an overview of the current status, school children and parents filled in a questionnaire about unsafe traffic spots, how they travel to school and which route they take.

Target groups: children
Fields: mobility advice & campaigns

This case study is one of 175 projects from the Smile Project Local Experiences Database listed on this website.
