Synopsis
The introduction of an intelligent public city bus transport with large capacity and of high quality in connection with the suburban railway, optimally organised cycling, maximally promoted walking and restrictions on the use of cars should constitute the key elements of a transport policy from a global and long-term perspective. Municipality of Maribor has led many actions to promote sustainable modes of transport. Public City Bus Transport is well efficient: expert bases to optimise the Public City Bus Transport have been commissioned; the Public City Bus Transport routes have been moved to the Maribor bus station; new routes have been introduced; sheltered bus stops have been set up. Cycling has been promoted: public bicycle stands were intalled, epoxy coat was applied. Regarding pedestrians, improvements were established: zebra crossings were equipped with traffic lights; enhanced control of pedestrian zones - automation; pavements were built at critical sections. An effort was also made to improve traffic safety: elimination of black spots; low speed zones 30 km/h; support for the activities of the Municipal Council for Education and Prevention in Road Traffic. Road traffic arrangement is also an important aspect of Maribor transport policy: construction of the perimeter highway; introduction of areas that are to a large extent accessible by the Public City Bus Transport; elimination of bottle necks; turning of crossroads into roundabouts.
