Case Study: The Travelwise Centre - Nottingham, UK

View the Case Study

Synopsis

Although the responsibility for local transport is split between Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council for their respective parts of the conurbation, the Greater Nottingham Local Transport Plan (LTP) has been produced jointly to cover the whole of the Greater Nottingham conurbation. This has allowed the authorities to develop a strategy for the future of the area included in the Plan on a rational basis, rather than on a basis that is dictated by administrative boundaries. The Plan, which covers the five-year period from April 2001 to the end of March 2006, performs the following functions:

One concrete results of this policy is the Nottingham Travelwise Centre - the UK's first "Mobility Centre". It was set up in 1999 with 4 staff dedicated to collating and distributing traffic and travel information for all modes of transport. The centre is staffed from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays, broadcasts 30 daily travel bulletins on local radio, runs a telephone hotline for requests and information, and collates and faxes information on all road works and incidents on the local highway network. It also mails out information, maps, timetables and guides. Personalised travel plans for employees in Nottinghamshire have been implemented since June 2000, to offer alternatives to their current car journeys to and from work. The plans offer bus advice at stop level, including times, prices, ticket options, egress points, maps. Also where applicable, train advice, Park & Ride Options, details to join a car sharing scheme, walking and cycling. All this is supported by timetables, maps, leaflets, and a comparison to the current car journey in terms of finance, health, environment and time. The personalised travel plans are researched and prepared by staff at the Nottingham Travelwise Centre. There is no cost to the customer for the plans. To date, over 200 plans have been sent and a follow up questionnaire has demonstrated that over 30% of recipients used a sustainable mode of transport "once a week or more" as a result of receiving their plan.
