View the Case Study

Synopsis

The principal objectives of Odense's transport policy are: to ensure a modal shift from private car to sustainable modes of transport (bus, bike, walk) and to improve quality of life and health. Odense plans to improve transport provision for all public and commercial use. Its aims are to reduce the environmental nuisance, address the use of cars related to workplaces and improve cycling facilities, with a special focus on shorter trips. The overall commuter policy initiates a sustainable traffic policy based on the management of collective mobility initiatives designed to limit the use of the car. The principal characteristics of this transport policy are:

The "Cycle trailer" campaign is organised each year since 2000. It aims to promote trailers for children and enable parents to try it for free. Indeed, trailers for children are well-known in Denmark, although only a very few people have tried it themselves yet. Trailers give good training for the parents and constitute a good model for the children to become cyclists too. New statistics from the university hospital of Odense show that there only one single traffic accident with a trailer for children has been registered during the last four years. This accident happened without other road users involved, and the child only fell out of the trailer because he was not fixed with the safety belt. In summary, the trailer is a healthy and a safe offer for new parents. An extra advantage is that you can carry two children plus some luggage without major problems.
