View the Case Study

Synopsis

The principal objectives of Odense's transport policy are: to ensure a modal shift from private car to sustainable modes of transport (bus, bike, walk) and to improve quality of life and health. Odense plans to improve transport provision for all public and commercial use. Its aims are to reduce the environmental nuisance, to address the use of cars related to workplaces and to improve cycling facilities, with a special focus on shorter trips. The overall commuter policy initiates a sustainable traffic policy based on the management of collective mobility initiatives designed to limit the use of the car.

The principal characteristics of this transport policy are:

In addition, the TARGET project will forward the policy through marketing campaigns and a limited number of general demonstration projects.

The main project initiative regarding car pooling will market and manage transport sharing at Odense University Hospital, where shared transport is required for 4,000 employees.

Odense is involved in the TARGET project that brings together five European partners to create and develop a range of activities that will promote and encourage the use of alternatives to the private car.

Expertise will be included in the compilation of best practice for providing shared transport. Outputs from the project include a catalogue of ideas for dissemination, campaigns, involvement of stakeholders and policy makers and demonstration of ideas.

The project will offer car pooling to all the employed at the University Hospital for free.

Thanks to a GIS (Geographic Information System) based database, they will all be able to find attractive matches for colleagues to share a ride with. The share of expenses only happens internal between these people.

Target groups: employers / employees
Fields: responsible car use / mobility plans
