Summary
The management of the systems and the service of public illumination in the "Entre o Douro e Vouga" (EDV) region presented serious inefficiencies. Face to this reality the Agency EDV ENERGIA elaborated a plan aiming to increase the efficiency and quality of the public lighting in the EDV region. On the other hand, the project of a Municipal Regulation of Public Illumination was elaborated in 2004, guaranteeing that the future new circuits of illumination would be rationally elaborated from the moment of conception to the final installation. Plus, a recovery plan for the already installed lighting system was also established within the municipalities of the region. In 2005 the renewal of 1200 lighting bulbs in more than 150 circuits is foreseen. This intervention will provide the municipalities' annual energy savings of 600 MWh and the 350.000€ global investment is expected to be recovered within 3 years approximately.
Results
Due to the implementation of the new technology in the 5% of the system during the first year of the project implementation, it is expected 600 MWh savings, which will benefit municipalities obtaining economies around 78.000€. In the other hand, with a reduction of 600 MWh per year this project will avoid the emission of about 300 tonnes of CO2 per year. Plus, with the new Municipal Regulation of Public Illumination, it is projected that the new circuits will present higher levels of energy efficiency.
