Synopsis
Amongst the basic principles of the transport policy for the urban area of Poitiers are the following objectives: to make the streets a place where people live, rather than a route for traffic to flow through (by giving priority to pedestrians, buses and cyclists at the planning stage and therefore making the town accessible to everyone) and to offer new transport solutions that facilitate travel, whilst at the same time encouraging cleaner forms of transport.
The Urban Community of Poitiers (CAP) has published information leaflets on walking, cycling, and public transport (by bus) which are aimed at increasing awareness of these modes of transport. The leaflets list the personal benefits as well as the environmental benefits of walking, cycling and of using public transport. They also give the average journey times by these modes of transport to various parts of Poitiers starting from the town centre.
"Poitiers Step by Step" ("Poitiers pas à pas") is aimed at pedestrians: a pocket map gives journey times between key points in the town centre.
"Less than 15 Minutes by Bus" ("En bus, c'est moins d'un quart d'heure") promotes bus travel: it shows a diagrammatic representation of journey times on the various Poitiers public transport network routes.
"Poitiers by Bike" ("A vélo, on est tous CAP"): a map showing journey times by bike between the local authorities in CAP, the town centre and the various districts.
