Synopsis
The city of Stockholm has an extensive traffic policy to improve the environmental and living quality of the city. The introduction and promotion of zero and low emission vehicles is part of this policy.
Another solution to improve the quality of life and the environmental situation consists in promoting and encouraging cycling for shorter trips. Stockholm is an ideal city for cycling as it is flat!
The objective of the "New Bicycle Plan for the City of Stockholm" (1998) is to create a uniform and coherent bicycle road network in order to stimulate cycling, intermodality and at the same time improve traffic safety for cyclists.
A number of projects have been initiated to increase the share of travels made by bike.
Campaigns such as "Bike to work" and "Bike-and-ride" have been launched. Since Stockholm is not a very biker-friendly city, an extensive programme for introducing bike lanes in the inner city has been launched.
Morever, specific bike maps are available on the Internet.
The Municipality of Stockholm is also involved in the E-TOUR project (Electric Two-wheelers On Urban Roads). Of the E-TOUR programme's 1,300 two-wheelers, 37 are being tested in Stockholm: 32 electric mopeds and 5 electric cycles. Both the Stockholm Environment and Health Protection Administration (Miljöförvaltningen) and the Equipment and Supply Service Organisation (MFO) are participants in the project, so that within the project, the electric two-wheelers will mainly be used by people employed by the city of Stockholm.
Earlier studies show that several employees travel less than 20-30 km each day. When they travel by car, there is most of the time only one person with a briefcase in the car. The electric moped will be an alternative to petrol cars and taxis for shorter journeys within the city. Electric two-wheelers don't pollute the air and don't produce any noise. The vehicles are also easy to park, and can easily be driven past any traffic congestion.
All electric mopeds in use in Stockholm are Peugeot Scootélecs. They have a range of 40 km in urban conditions. A run down battery can be fully recharged in 5 hours. Maximum speed vary between 30 and 45 km/h, depending on the rider's selection (economy or sport mode). One of the electric mopeds is included in the test fleet made available to the Stockholm's business community.
Electric cycles will make it easier for the city employees to choose to cycle for work trips. The electric cycles used in the Stockholm project are all Merida Powercycle 550s. This four-gear cycle, made in Taiwan, has a range of 60 km. It takes 2.5 hours to charge an empty battery (environmentally friendly nickel-metal hydride) and the cycle itself weighs 24.5 kg.
