Case Study: A car-pooling scheme - Södertälje, Sweden

View the Case Study

Synopsis

Södertälje is a lively town with an identity of its own and a very active cultural and sporting life. Thousands of travellers pass through our six railway stations every day and many visitors come to Södertälje to see our tourist attractions.

The town has excellent communications via commuter trains (35 minutes to Stockholm) and long-distance rail services. European trunk routes E4 and E20 meet at Södertälje and our attractive waterway, the Södertälje Canal, is used by thousands of freighters, yachts and cruisers every year.

The Municipality of Södertälje, together with Astra Zeneca and Scania, have agreed to co-operate in providing car pooling for their employees. Each company pays a consultant (Datessa) to manage an Internet car pooling scheme.

The car pooling scheme only accepts employees of the participant companies. This is to ensure the safety of the employees.

The first time you visit the Datessa home page, you register your address and the time that you leave for work (or any other time that is of interest to you). If you have a car of your own, you register that too. If you don't, you register the fact that you are interested in finding someone who has.

If the system finds anyone living near you, and if your timetable matches, you receive an e-mail from Datessa. After that, it's up to you to make contact (either by phone or by mail) and to meet.

This car pooling scheme has already been implemented in the Municipality of€Jönköping.
