Vienna Citybike - Public bicycles free of charge.
The Vienna Citybike system is successor of the 2002 Viennabike system and part of the Climate Protection Programme of Vienna and of Vienna's aim to double the share of the bicycle in the modal split until 2010.
The original Viennabike system started in May 2002 and was re-launched in July. Since then, 1,540 bicycles (unmistakably designed) could be used free of charge in the inner districts of Vienna. The only thing to pay was a deposit, which in 2002 was 2 €, once a bicycle was taken from one of the 235 terminals, well spread throughout the inner city of Vienna. In these stations the bicycles were locked with the system well known from shopping trolleys in supermarkets.
The new Vienna Citybike system for 2003 changes a few things: there will be 80-100 terminals, mostly at subway stations. Due to vandalism in 2002, users will have to register themselves by using a bank or credit card to unlock a bicycle. Only the first hour of use will be free of charge. For the second hour 2 € will have to be paid, for further hours 4 €/h. The system will operate without public funding. To decrease problems with the bicycles, they will be made of unique, durable parts such as solid rubber tires.
A sophisticated terminal system which touch screen will show, how many bikes are available at which terminals. It is allowed to use the bicycles in the whole area of Vienna.
