Synopsis

Project to promote total access to public transport for people with a severe mobility handicap, including:

Actions involving vehicle fleets:

• since 1995, all new buses of the Zaragoza Urban Transport Company (TUZSA) fleet are of low level access type, fitted with easy-access ramp systems (90 new units between 1999 and 2002),
• incorporation between 1992 and 1999 of 6 vehicles specifically designed and built to transport people with a severe mobility handicap, and development in 2000 of a new bus model exclusively used to provide door-to-door transport for these people.

Actions involving transport infrastructure:

• adaptation of a high-demand route to allow total accessibility: adaptation of 45 stops to equip them with a concrete platform eliminating the level difference between the pavement and the deck of the bus, and incorporation of access ramps to the 16 buses in service on working days (and one in reserve), in order to make it easier for wheel chairs to get on and off these buses,
• adaptation of 73 more bus stops on other bus lines.

Actions on transport management for people with a severe mobility handicap:

• development of a new programme for this specific transport management, and training of disabled persons to enable them to manage the service and join TUZSA's organisation.
