The report examines the importance of coal to energy security worldwide. As global demand for energy continues to rise, energy security concerns become ever more important. Coal has a unique role to play in meeting the demand for a secure energy supply.

Coal: Secure Energy is a report by the World Coal Institute on the contribution of coal to global sustainable development. It develops the position set out in The Role of Coal as an Energy Source (WCI 2003) on coal's role in maintaining global energy security.

This report calls for policy support to:

• Enable the clean and efficient use of coal;
• Facilitate technology transfer to develop economies;
• Promote research, development and demonstration;
• Reduce investment uncertainty;
• Address environmental concerns.
