Report: Clean Coal - Building a Future through Technology - UK
The World Coal Institute, UK published Clean Coal - Building a Future through Technology in July 2004.
Clean Coal - Building a Future through Technology shows that technologies are available to improve
the environmental performance of coal-fired power stations for countries at every stage of economic
development. There is a road along which progress can be made, which includes:
- The enhanced take-up of existing options - including coal cleaning, electrostatic precipitators, fabric
filters, flue gas desulphurisation technology, and NOx reduction technologies, such as selective catalytic
reduction and low NOx burners.
- Improving efficiency levels at coal-fired power stations.
- The deployment of advanced technologies. Fluidised bed combustion, supercritical and
ultrasupercritical power plant technology and integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC).
- Exploiting synergies with renewables.
- The development and commercialisation of next generation technologies, such as carbon capture and
storage.
