Smart metering technology has a significant potential in reducing the energy demands and carbon emissions from businesses. Larger companies are already benefitting from this technology.
A UK Carbon trust report concluded from a pilot of smart metering technology in SMEs that SMEs using advanced metering can identify an average of 12% carbon savings and implement an average of 5% carbon savings through reduced utility consumption. The SMEs involved in the trial achieved average annual savings of over £1,000 and 8.5 tCO2 per site.
The data from smart metering also has a significant potential role to play in the construction of energy use maps. This mapping can inform planning for sustainable energy generation technology.
Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP), UK, proposes the setting up of a city Smart Metering Bureau in Nottingham to promote the technology to SMEs and ensure that businesses are supported to get the maximum financial and environmenatal benefit from the technology once installed.
NEP would like to find partners who are keen to promote this type of technology to businesses in their area.
