Energy management is one of the tools with which hotels and hostels can save considerable amounts of money whilst safeguarding the environment through the more controlled use of energy. Another option in this regard is to avail themselves of the range of existent renewable energy sources (RES). The latter option will make sense only after the operating procedures of the hotel have embraced an energy management strategy for the elimination of energy wastage.
A pilot project has shown that by the judicial installation of energy management units in hotel rooms, the hotel owner may save around 20% of the total energy bill. Such a saving will go a long way in cutting down the 40% energy consumption used up in the building sector (Legislation: COM 2002/91/EC: Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings). It is calculated that Hotels having a rating less than 3 stars and hostels utilise 250 KWh/m² (Dascalaki, 2004). Reducing such consumption rates by 20% would result in great savings both financially and environmentally.
The project, using state of the art dissemination techniques, will aim to make aware European Hotel Management on the benefits related to the use of energy management products. With assistance from national and international Hotel Associations, the project will facilitate the process of implementing such products.
