Partner Search Request: Sustainable Tourism, Portugal

INTELI - Inteligência em Inovaçao, Portugal, sees tourism as an economic activity of great; mainly ones related to energy consumption. As such, at a time when environment preservation is seen as increasingly important, it is crucial to support a sustainable tourism growth. This project intends to promote better environmental and energetic performances of the tourism industry in the participating regions.

This aim would be achieved through the study and implementation of best practices in this industry (comprising accommodation transportation and other activities), including the creation of a carbon offset programme, and the international promotion of the participating regions as carbon neutral destinations. As a final result, this project aims to encourage tourists to consider their energy consumption and subsequent carbon footprint in their choice regarding accommodation, transportation and other aspects.

The proposed activities are

• Best practices analysis and identification (in the fields of accommodation, transportation and other activities concerning tourism) including carbon funds designed for tourism, and sustainable tourism certification.
• Development of action plans for tourism regions and subsequent implementation (including training, promoting the market penetration of new sustainable energy systems and equipments, etc.)
• Creation of local carbon offset schemes, including an appropriate information package aimed at tourists related to the carbon footprint of the available activities.
• International promotion of participating regions as carbon neural destinations, encouraging tourists to consider their energy consumption and subsequent carbon footprint in their tourism choices.

The following types of organisations are sought as possible partners:

• Regional energy agencies;
• Tourism associations;
• SMEs (operating in the tourism sector; energy sector or carbon offset sector)
• Transport companies.
