Stazione sperimentale per i Combustibili, Italy, is looking for partners for an IEE project - Bio-Training. A number of technical, economical and cultural barriers hinder the diffusion of biomass for domestic heating systems. Some studies have demonstrated that a significant amount of fine particles found in the atmosphere, come from the combustion of renewable fuels in domestic heaters, especially in those areas where this kind of appliances are more widespread. This fact could severely weaken the general consensus on a wider use of renewable energy sources. Actually, low energy efficiency and high emissions are largely due to incorrect operation of small scale biomass appliances and/or to adoption of obsolete technologies. In fact, the overall performance strongly depends on the heating system typology, on fuel quality, as well as on the consumer behaviour in using the appliances for both automatic and manual operation. The aim of the project is to spread out the specific know-how of the different partners of this proposal in the field of biomass appliances, by providing a reliable update of the available technologies in relation to their costs and environmental impact, and to train non-technical professionals and consumers to a correct use of such systems as fireplaces, stoves and biomass boilers.
