CIVITAS II falls within the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) for research, technological development and demonstration (RTD), non-nuclear energy research is mainly funded under the "Sustainable Energy Systems" (SES) thematic sub-priority. Calls for Proposals can be found at: fp6.cordis.lu/fp6/calls_activity.cfm?ID_ACTIVITY=315
The CIVITAS Initiative launched by the European Commission in the year 2000, supports ambitious cities in introducing and testing bold and innovative measures to radically improve urban transport. The aim is to achieve a significant change in the modal split towards sustainable transport modes, and to increase the use of clean vehicles and alternative fuels.
In order to achieve their objectives, the CIVITAS cities combine a coherent set of measures that are specifically selected to match local circumstances. The measures address both the demand side and the supply side of transport. The cities follow an integrated approach towards energy and transport policies.
Financial support from the European Commission
As a first step, the European Commission contributed 50 million Euros to co-finance demonstration projects in 19 European cities (Aalborg, Barcelona, Berlin, Bremen, Bristol, Bucharest, Cork, Gdynia, Göteborg, Graz, Kaunas, Lille, Nantes, Pécs, Prague, Rome, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Winchester). These projects started in early 2002 and will be running for four years.
The European Commission intends to extend its financial support under the CIVITAS Initiative to other ambitious European cities within the framework of the forthcoming Sixth RTD Framework Programme.
CIVITAS Forum launched on 9 October 2002
The CIVITAS Forum is a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences between the CIVITAS cities, and with other cities that are committed to the introduction of ambitious urban transport policies - in line with the CIVITAS approach.
The official CIVITAS Forum launch took place on 9 October 2002 in Brussels and was open to representatives from all interested European cities. High-level representatives from the CIVITAS cities participated in the launch event and informed other cities about their ambitions and plans within CIVITAS.
