The city of Leuven shows high ambitions in its effort for sustainable development. This effort materializes in the city redevelopments plans around the "Vaartkom". This area, largely an old industrial site of the brewery Inbev, will be redeveloped around a concept called "Urban convenience". This concept combines quality of life for the inhabitants with an energy performance that not only exceeds current standards significantly, but also with the utilisation of large fractions of sustainable energy. Among the measures to be taken counts a sustainable heat delivery system for the site.
The partners involved pursue an integrated approach. This is ensured by not only reducing the amount of required energy, but also by on-site energy management, that monitors the energy demand and tries to adjust production to optimize the sustainability and cost.
This approach fits with the ambitions of Belgium and the EU. The impact of the project in Europe will be significant as replication can be expected in many urban redevelopment projects.
The development area will serve as a living environment for around 5000 people in about 1200 dwellings. Total built area will have a floor surface of 170000 m². Dwellings and facilities are in the same area, minimizing the need for motorized transport. The 10 ha. area will not contain streets, but cycle paths and a park like environment. Additionally, an old classified building (Den Hoorn) will be refurbished and expanded. The new complex will serve as a home base for multiple SME companies.
The Leuven Project is looking for two associated communities who are located in Europe (Belgium and the Netherlands excluded).
Associated communities that are interested in this project will follow the development of the project and learn the attractiveness of the several technologies and concepts used.
The associated communities should have an overlap in interest and should show ambitions to implement similar technologies or activities within their community.
