Background
With respect to energy production, most of the islands in Europe depend on importation, mainly of oil. In most of the cases, there are no ways to link the islands to continental European energy production networks.
Tourism is one of the most important economic activities in the Islands. Energy and water demand for tourism is high, mainly during the peak season (summer), when cooling and water needs are very important. Energy production and air conditioning systems present low efficiency, fresh water availability and storage is deficient. Tourism produces significant amounts of waste, which is a big problem in a closed ecosystem such as an island.
One of the most important means to increase efficiency and to reduce pollution and CO2 emissions is to mobilise efforts to organise and rationalise the energy systems, mainly by the rational production and consumption of the energy produced and the use of endigenous energy sources. In general, the islands present great potential in renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, hydro and energy from waste.
Other energy sources can also be used to tackle the energy problems of the islands: the use of liquified natural gas, hydrogen, fuel cells (with local production of hydrogen for the cells) and co-generation (tri-generation with district cooling). Seawater desalination process can be used for energy storage.
Main Objectives
The objective of this project is to overcome problems, including public acceptance, associated with integrating new and renewable energy sources into energy systems in islands and continental remote and isolated regions.
The project assesses new and renewable energy sources and energy and water problems in islands and remote regions in order to design appropriate technological scenarios to solve these problems. Environmental, social, economic and technical impact studies will be undertaken for the applicability of those technological solutions to the cases of different islands and remote regions sites and sectors, enabling the identification of an adequate solution in each case. The cost benefit analysis of each solution will be analysed, considering social, economic and legal aspects to increase the chances of the application of the technological scenario in the target sites and sectors.
