Abstract
If the share of renewable energy in Europe is to be increased to 12 % by 2010, one has to consider an increase in the use of biomass, both for heat and for electricity production. Wood, wooden waste and straw are anything but rare, but they need rather heavy investments if they are to be fully exploited. That is why the use of wood and straw as a real renewable energy source (keeping the sustainable use and growth in mind!) still is subordinate in comparison to other renewable energy sources. As an example of facilities in Austria, we present the town of Feldkirch, where a wood-chip-fired interconnected heating system was implemented in 1996.
Key words: Municipal buildings and facilities
This case study was prepared by Energie-Cités in co-operation with the municipality of Feldkirch. It received funding from the ALTENER Programme of Energy and Transport DG of the European Commission.
