Case Study: Energy, water, sewerage - Europe's largest lagooning station in Rochefort, France

Abstract

The municipality became aware very early of the interest of taking account of the environment in the town's redevelopment projects: founding of a municipal energy department in 1982, participative operation with the inhabitants in Energy & Environment initiatives in the context of the OBJECTIF NATURE project (1990-1995), wood-heated municipal greenhouses.

Falling perfectly in line with this momentum was the setting up of a think-tank in 1985 to seek ways of making the necessary extension to the sewage processing station.

Commissioned in 1989, the biological part of the waste process system is made up of 6 (six) beds with a total surface area of 35 hectares (1m to 1m50 deep). Waste flows slowly (4 months), the time necessary for its re-oxygenation by the wind and the destruction of germs by the action of solar ultra-violet rays.

Apart from regulatory results (MES, DBO5) obtained at the end of processing, the water outflowing into the Charente could be graded as "bathing water" from the bacteriological point of view.
