ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments implementing sustainable development. Its mission is to build and serve a worldwide movement of local governments to achieve tangible improvements in global sustainability with special focus on environmental conditions through cumulative local actions. ICLEI has several projects and initiatives which provide case studies.

One of ICLEI's fundamental "core" services to its Members is to serve as an information clearinghouse on local environmental initiatives. ICLEI has performed this service through the publication of newsletters, a case study series, and a variety of technical manuals on topics ranging from financing energy efficiency projects to solid waste management to the use of municipal economic instruments to increase environmental performance.

These case studies use successful examples of local environmental and development management to present key concepts for implementing sustainable development at the local level. "Local Sustainability," the European Good Practice Information Service is a guide to sustainable good practice developed in 1996. It was operated by the EURONET / ICLEI Consortium and was developed with the financial support of the European Commission, Directorate General XI for Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection. The entry of new cases stopped in 1999.

Cities for Climate Protection Campaign is an international campaign which has gained the participation of hundreds of cities worldwide whose combined CO2 output represents 5 -10% of the world total of greenhouse gases. Participating cities pledge to develop a "local action plan" to reduce local emissions of toxic pollutants with special emphasis on CO2 emissions through the adoption of the "Municipal Leaders' Declaration of Climate Change and the Urban Environment".
