Synopsis
Everybody wants lively and accessible city centres where we can all move around safely and where trade and culture are flourishing. This requires delivery of goods on a daily basis. However, so far the distribution of goods has not been in accordance with wishes regarding the city's space and environment. Exploration of other solutions and testing of alternative models in smaller city areas led three Danish municipalities - Aalborg, Aarhus and Copenhagen - to prepare a joint programme for the development of goods transport in city areas. The three cities and the Ministry of Transport have thus created a steering group, which has established a joint forum - the Forum for City Logistics.
On the basis of practical experience the Forum is to investigate which environmental benefits can be gained by applying various distribution models with or without local restrictions. It is important to emphazise that the principal objective of Aalborg's transport policy is to secure a sustainable development weighing the need for transport against the environmental impact. Consequently, improving quality of life and health by reducing air pollution and noise nuisance by proper planning, stimulating sustainable transport modes, improving traffic safety for the citizens and especially for children are obvious important objectives for the local authority.
Since year 2000 different measures have been used to make the distribution of goods in the city centre of Aalborg more effective and more environmental friendly. For example, time restrictions for the delivery of packages and using loading and unloading zones in the area. The latest measure started in January 2003 and is the introduction of a voluntary cooperation between four of the major goods distributors in the Aalborg Area. The primary target groups are the goods distributors and the shopkeepers located in the city centre. But also the pedestrians and people who live in the central area benefit from this initiative. The cooperation ensures that a minimum of vehicles enter the city centre by sharing the same vehicles to deliver packages. Other companies can also use the service to get a package delivered by the partners by paying a small fee.
